CreditVision for Business: Forewarned is forearmed

CV4B Credit risk management for businesses that lend money

CreditVision for Business: Spot and prevent potential credit risks before liquidation is even on the cards

In today’s volatile economy, there is no room for risk. A strong credit risk management strategy is an absolute must for lenders, to help them minimise risks and maximise profits and productivity.

TransUnion’s CreditVision for Business* (CV4B) report enables lenders to spot credit risks by determining the likelihood of a business defaulting on a credit facility within 12 months of commencement.

Based on TransUnion’s extensive commercial database, the CV4B scorecard suite uses over 200 predictive characteristics to determine this probability.

CV4B helps lenders harness the power of alternative data sources and a multidimensional evaluation of risk to gain insight into how likely a business is to repay its debt.

CV4B: Easy, fast, accurate

pbVerify’s CV4B report outputs easy-to-understand data. It provides a three-digit company score and a three-digit principal score. The two scores are banded into seven easy-to-interpret overall risk bands ranging from C1 (the lowest risk companies) to C7 (highest risk companies).

The performance of a business’s directors has proven to be greatly predictive of its delinquency. CV4B analyses a prospective business customer and its principals to assign a score to each. These scores represent the risk associated with the commercial customer, as well as the risk associated with the principals.

These scores are statistically combined to give credit grantors the most accurate view of business risk. Overlaying company-specific data with principal or director data improves the scorecard performance by 25%: maximising predictive power and increasing accuracy.

The CV4B difference

While the speed, simplicity and accuracy of our CV4B reports is compelling in itself, the true power of CV4B lies in the fact that it provides an entirely holistic view of the delinquency risk associated with a business.

A business’s going concern is an important indicator of a sound debtor, it does not give lenders a complete view of the associated delinquency risk. It can take months for liquidation to take effect and the longer a business struggles, the more debt piles up and the harder it is to recoup money.

CV4B provides a transparent view of a business’s default risk by using its going concern status merely as an indicator and not the final outcome of the score. The default probability of a business is essential for loan appraisal and this information can be used to price, set limits and terms for each customer and ensure the safety of lenders’ money.

CV4B benefits

The ability to easily identify and evaluate both risky and profitable customers is a gamechanger for lenders in a highly competitive environment that holds more risks than ever before.

The benefits of CV4B include:

  1. The elimination of manual reviews: The manual review process is complex and time-consuming. Having good, accurate data dramatically reduces the need for manual reviews, and improves lenders’ portfolio risk management.
  2. Rein in credit risk exposure: CV4B enables lenders to keep credit risk exposure within acceptable limits.
  3. Customised offerings: Armed with CV4B report data, lenders can offer the right price and terms to customers on the back of determined risk levels.
  4. Hands-on risk management: CV4Bempowers lenders in the short term too, by enabling them to take action on existing customers who are showing signs of distress.
  5. Targeted marketing strategies: CV4B data gives companies in-depth insights into markets, allowing them to implement a marketing plan focused on growing sales within a specific group of consumers.
  6. Assess risk of existing portfolio for collection purposes: Existing portfolios are sometimes forgotten in the risk management process, with potential borrowers taking precedence. CV4B keeps all aspects of a company’s risks in view, so they can constantly keep their fingers on the pulse of their business.

Late payments and non-payment of loan commitments are becoming far too common for companies to take anything less than a uncompromising stance when it comes to risk evaluation and management.

Phone ID verification service now available

PhoneID & Score via web is now available

pbVerify’s PhoneID & Score service is now available via our website, allowing users to input a mobile phone number and get data back as to the individual the number is associated with, as well as new additional data now available with our latest update.

Previously only available as an API (application programming interface), PhoneID & Score has always offered data intelligence about an individual’s device and contact information.

With our latest update, as well as opening the service up to any individual who wants to match a mobile phone number to a user via our website, is the addition of the person’s date of birth, and the telecoms provider (telco) their number is linked to.

How PhoneID & Score works

The PhoneID & Score services gives individuals and businesses detailed and actionable global phone number and subscriber data intelligence. For businesses, this allows them to reinforce authentications, evaluate fraud risks, and enhance overall user experience.

There are three parts to the service:

  1. Phone number identification (PhoneID):
You input a mobile phone number, and the system returns data about the phone number’s owner, their device, their telco and their date of birth. In addition to the benefits of verification and risk management, this allows the user to determine the best channel for message delivery.

Additionally, PhoneID’s SIM Swap feature allows you to find out whether a phone number’s SIM has been swapped and if so, at what point. The API then evaluates the likelihood of the SIM swap having been done to commit fraud, using a scale from 1 to 4.

For more on the SIM Swap feature, see our blog “pbVerify bolsters product stack with PhoneID & Score” HERE.

  2. Phone Score
Again, after inputting a mobile phone number, you are able to get data regarding the usage of the number, and whether or not this raises suspicion. For example, if the number has been registered to different individuals, if a SIM swap has taken place on more than one occasion, or the number is linked to a high volume of SMSes (bulk SMS) or voice calls, and whether or not there are any payment issues related to the number’s owner (whether the number has been blocked due to bank or carrier flags), etc.

For businesses, the idea behind this is that, by registering fake accounts, criminals can attack legitimate users. By identifying and blocking fraudsters at account registration, businesses effectively streamline the process for genuine users. The “Score” part of pbVerify’s PhoneID & Score API acts as a flagging (vetting) agent, allowing businesses to identify bad actors who aim to use their account for phishing attacks, promo abuse, and other fraud.

  3. COMING SOON: Contact Match
Contact Match will allow you to input the individual’s mobile number and can then match the individual’s name details to the contact number linked to the carrier. When checking this, you validate the contact against the details at the network carrier. This gives you the ability to verify consumers’ details with around 80% of global telecommunications carriers (including local carriers Vodacom, MTN, CellC, Telkom). This can be used in conjunction with all PhoneID and Score products from pbVerify.

Forewarned is forearmed

For a business, falling victim to fraud is potentially ruinous. pbVerify’s suite of products help businesses stop fraud in its tracks.

The PhoneID & Score product is available on the pbVerify platform in a RESTFul API for direct integration, and directly through the website on an ad-hoc basis, with the option of single credit purchases.

SA’s new ID system to make digital service delivery a ‘seamless reality’

SA's new digital ID system

New ID system on the way: South Africa’s citizen identification system is undergoing a digital revamp, with the intention of spurring economic growth and enhancing service delivery and security for citizens and expatriates in the country.

Planned for operational launch in March 2024, the National Identity System (NIS) will replace the current National Population Register, and essentially become the new core of all Home Affairs functions in South Africa.

The country’s current ID system, which has its roots as far back as the 1950s, has seen several modifications over the past decades – notably the switchover from the old green bar-coded ID books to new Smart ID Cards in 2013.

New ID system an economic enabler

In official communication from the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in late 2020, the department indicates that its expectations are that the new system will ultimately trigger economic transformation by boosting digital transactions for both government and business.

The key elements of the DHA’s identity management system are as follows:

  1. Single digital population register of all people who live and have lived in the country.
  2. Biometric-based NIS that enables a single view of a person, e-government and e-commerce.
  3. Policy that provides for a constitutionally sound framework to manage personal information that will be collected and stored in the NIS.
  4. Legislation that establishes clear rules to govern accessing and processing the population register records in line with relevant policies and legislation such as the POPI Act and Cybercrimes Bill.

New ID system a digital boon

In the latest Home Affairs Yearbook by the Government Communication and Information System,  DHA writes that it is “In the process of implementing a single integrated source of biographic and biometric information – to make digital service delivery a seamless reality”.

The department says the system will merge historically disjointed records and systems, resulting in far-reaching benefits for the country at large. “The current disparate civic and immigration systems will produce secure data that will feed into the NIS according to an identity management policy and an updated identification Act.

“All processes – the registration of births, marriages and deaths – will be digitised and secured. The successful implementation of the NIS will lead to a substantial reduction in fraudulent transactions; and enable efficient e-government and e-commerce services.”

The NIS is a major part of the DHA’s ICT Modernisation Programme, which was initiated in 2012 to “overhaul the department’s core business applications, technology infrastructure, and overall operations for improved service delivery”.

FaceTec 3D Liveness: A cut above the rest

The global facial recognition market is huge. Exactly how huge? Well, research published in April by Brand Essence Research estimated the market would grow from $3.62 Billion in 2020 to a whopping $11.6 Billion by 2027.

With that kind of growth in an already saturated market, how do you go about finding the right facial biometric solution – the one that offers the best security and most accurate ID authentication for your risk management requirements?

This is how: You start by sifting out the ones that don’t have the highest levels of accuracy to give you supreme peace of mind. Overlook the ones that have not been put through the most stringent of attack detection tests – and passed – and skip any vendor that isn’t so confident in their product, that they are willing to put their money where their mouth is.

Superior software

Introducing FaceTec – the first and only face authenticator certified to Level 1 and 2 in the iBeta/NIST Presentation Attack Detection test based on the ISO 30107-3 standard.

Founded in 2013, FaceTec is the world leader in 3D Face Liveness & Matching software with a FAR (False Accept Rate) setting of 1 / 4.2M @ <1% FRR (False Rejection Rate), and patented 3D depth detection and human liveness detection that cannot be fooled by 2D photos, videos, or even 3D masks or life-like dolls.

On top of those impressive facts, FaceTec is also the only 3D liveness detection and face authentication software that is backed by a $100 000 Spoof Bounty Programme to prove its liveness detection can be trusted in real-world unsupervised scenarios.

Proof of the pudding

When compared to other biometric modalities, with the most common being fingerprint, iris and voice, FaceTec stands head and shoulders above the rest:

  • Faces are the biometric modality that is most accurately verified by humans, and selfies are ubiquitous and intuitive. We don’t recognise people by their fingerprints, irises, palms or veins, so when an audit trail is needed, face images are the gold standard.
  • FaceTec is universal. Its software works on all modern smart devices or webcams, with no special hardware required.
  • FaceTec is integrated into apps/web pages themselves, and so is not restricted by device model, operating system or fragmented hardware sensors.
  • FaceTec’s encrypted 3D FaceMaps enable portable, cross-platform, cross-device authentication.
  • FaceTec’s 3D FaceMaps provide trusted unsupervised authentications, because they cannot be reverse engineered back into biometric data that can spoof the system. This effectively makes them unshareable and unphishable.
  • FaceTec has certified 3D Liveness detection that can be used to authenticate users and/or to verify liveness and run 1:N duplicate checks during onboarding/KYC.
  • FaceTec has anonymous age checks that allow restricted access to age-rated products.
  • FaceTec has a built-in Photo ID capture UI that compares the Face on the ID to the 3D FaceMap.

And if all that wasn’t enough, take a look at the comparison table below, to see how FaceTec stacks up against the 2D software and 3D hardware on the market today:

Realtime ID Verification data expanded

pbVerify adds six new data fields its ID Verification reports, further strengthening companies’ risk management efforts.

As part of ongoing product improvements, pbVerify has added to the list of data returned in its ID Verification reports.

It’s an undisputed fact: Financial transactions are safer when you know your customer. And the more you know about your customer, the safer the transaction.

Which is why the pbVerify team is constantly expanding its ID Verification tools and services – the latest being the addition of six more data fields that are returned when companies carry out Realtime ID Verification (IDV) checks on customers.

The original Realtime IDV report returned the following live data: An ID photograph, ID number, first name and surname, date of birth, age, gender, citizenship (yes/no), deceased status and ID document type.

New ID Verification data

For further authentication, the report now also includes:

  1. Country of birth: Should a “Foreigner” status be returned, the data specifies the country, E.G. ZI (Zimbabwe), UK, US, AUS (Australia), etc.
  2. Date of issue: The date the individual’s ID number was issued to them.
  3. ID Blocked: Indicates if the individual’s ID number has been blocked at the Department of Home Affairs.
  4. Marriage status: Gives the individual’s marriage status (Married, Widowed, Separated, Divorced, Single).
  5. Date of marriage: The date the individual was married.
  6. ID Card or ID Book issue data: Indicates whether the individual has an ID card or ID document (book), and the date the relevant ID proof was issued.

ID Verification use cases

pbVerify’s ID Verification tool is used by corporations to authenticate the identity information of South African citizens, as well as to determine whether they are credit active. The validation of ID data is a course of action taken by many organisations as part of their basic credit risk management processes and policies, to the end of promoting good corporate governance.

ID verification is also used for KYC (Know Your Customer) strategies, by companies that want to ensure compliance and legitimacy of ID information. pbVerify’s ID verification search confirms the validity of South African ID numbers, and confirms related names, as they appear on the Golden Source, ID verification database. This is done by means of a reverse lookup process, using only an ID number.

pbVerify’s ID verification product forms part of our standard product suite, and can be uploaded in batch spreadsheet or single entries, which are available after registration to any business.

FaceTec 3D Liveness software enables frictionless, secure transacting

aceTec 3D Liveness & Enrolment

Meet the face authentication market leader that provides more security, portability, and convenience than any other biometric.

Given the sudden explosion in online activity, spurred by a global pandemic that caught the business world off-guard and forced in-person transactions to go fully online almost overnight, corporates and their customers could be sitting ducks for cyber criminals. That is, without the right kind of software “brick wall” to block them.

Enter FaceTec: The world’s first liveness detection and face authentication software that is iBeta Level 1 and Level 2 certified, and that is backed by a $100 000 Spoof Bounty Programme to prove its liveness detection can be trusted in real-world unsupervised scenarios.

In Biometrics, Liveness Detection is an AI computer system’s ability to determine that it is interfacing with a physically present human being and not an inanimate spoof artifact. Using 3D liveness face mapping and enrolment, FaceTec proves the correct user is physically present by matching them to their ID Photo or 3D FaceMap.

FaceTec embodies a frictionless, top security experience for genuine users, and acts as an impenetrable brick wall for bad actors.

How it works

During onboarding, FaceTec’s two-second video-selfie verifies Liveness, matches the user’s 3D FaceMap to their Photo ID, and sets up their new account (enrolment).  Every time they return, FaceTec’s ongoing authentication again proves Liveness and compares their new 3D FaceMap to the one enrolled.  If they match, they get instant access – no password required.

This process is underpinned primarily by three factors:

  1. Enrolment. The first time a user interacts with FaceTec is when they add their face data to the system. During this enrolment process, a Liveness Check is performed, generating the biometric data that becomes the foundation for the user’s 3D FaceMap. But that is just the beginning. What you can do with this enrolment data, is where the real magic lies.
  2. Liveness Check. The user’s face is analysed by FaceTec’s AI, and if the images do not contain a live human, the session is rejected as a spoof.
  3. Liveness Detection. It must be noted that 3D depth detection and face matching alone do not prove liveness.  For example, masks and dolls are 3D, but are not alive.  FaceTec also uses sophisticated proprietary algorithms to detect concurrent human traits such as skin texture, reflections in the eyes, eye focus, pupil dilation, and many more.

Why FaceTec?

Facial recognition – and biometrics at large – are nothing new. The earliest accounts of biometrics can be dated as far back as 500BC in Babylonian empire, with the first record of a biometric identification system being in 1800s, Paris, France. And facial recognition technology, as we have mentioned previously, originated over 50 years ago.

So there are scores of solutions out there based on technology steeped in biometrics, and scores more that promise security and peace of mind. So how does FaceTec set itself apart, and how does it solidify the promise of security and peace of mind?

The points that follow speak for themselves:

  1. Faces are the biometric modality that is most accurately verified by humans, and selfies are ubiquitous and intuitive. We don’t recognise other people by their fingerprints, irises, palms or veins, so when an audit trail is needed, face images are the gold standard.
  2. FaceTec is universal software for modern smart devices or webcams, no special hardware is required.
  3. FaceTec is integrated into the apps/web pages themselves, so it’s not restricted by device model, OS, or fragmented hardware sensors.
  4. FaceTec’s encrypted 3D FaceMaps enable portable, cross-platform, cross-device authentication.
  5. FaceTec’s 3D FaceMaps provide trusted unsupervised authentications because they can’t be reverse-engineered back into biometric data that can spoof the system, making them effectively unshareable and unphishable.
  6. FaceTec has certified 3D Liveness detection that can be used to authenticate users and/or to verify liveness and run 1:N duplicate checks during onboarding/KYC.
  7. FaceTec has anonymous age checks, to provide access only to adults for age-gated products.
  8. FaceTec has a built-in Photo ID capture UI that compares the face on the ID to the 3D FaceMap.

Ultimate solution

Although cybercrime is a worldwide phenomenon that takes no prisoners, South Africa is of the hardest hit.

The country has the third most cybercrime victims worldwide, according to global services and consulting company Accenture, which says the country is losing a massive R2. 2 billion a year because of low investment in cyber security and immature cybercrime legislation.

Given the facts – around both threat and the solution laid out – for corporates that value the protection of customer data, FaceTec is not just another solution, it is the solution. And for their customers, what it offers is the ultimate peace of mind.

FaceTec 3D Face Matching: Only astounding levels of accuracy will do

3D:3D Face matching

FaceTec 3D Face Matching: So you’re looking at facial recognition software and you see promises of “99.9% accuracy” – sounds excellent, right? Wrong. The fact of the matter is, when it comes to biometrics, you must demand accuracy in terms of 99.999% – and above.

Which is just what you will get from 3D liveness and facial recognition company FaceTec, the first and only face authenticator certified to Level 1 and 2 in the iBeta/NIST Presentation Attack Detection test based on the ISO 30107-3 standard.

FaceTec – the world leader in Face Liveness & Matching software – lives by the conviction that accuracy percentages are of utmost importance, especially in industries such as banks and other financial services, where there are hundreds of thousands, or even millions of users.

In fact, the company offers a FAR (False Accept Rate) setting of 1/125 million @ <1% FRR (False Rejection Rate), and patented 3D depth detection and human liveness detection that cannot be fooled by 2D photos, videos, or even 3D masks or life-like dolls.

And, putting its money where its mouth is, FaceTec is also the only 3D liveness detection and face authentication software that is backed by a $200 000 Spoof Bounty Programme to prove its liveness detection can be trusted in real-world unsupervised scenarios.

3D Face Matching: What’s the big deal?

There are plenty of biometric software vendors that offer 2D to 2D face matching, such as smartphone 2D Face Unlock, which uses a device’s front-facing camera to capture an image of a user, and then stores it.

But 2D Matching will never have the accuracy needed for true unsupervised identity verification and authentication, because there is just too much variability in how the same 3D human face appears when flattened into 2D at different image capture distances. This variability creates significant overlapping similarity between the 2D features of different humans and confuses the 2D algorithms, preventing them from achieving highly accurate FARs at usable FRRs.

FaceTec stands by its promise that its 3D matching algorithms are the most accurate in the world. “FaceTec leverages 3D FaceMap Technology to achieve levels of accuracy ~10 times better than Apple’s Face ID and 50-100X times better than the 2D NIST FRVT leaders measures in its ongoing vendor tests.”

Decoding the complexity

FAR, FRR, NIST, FaceMap, 3D, 2D, biometrics, liveness – it sounds really complicated, but it all comes down to confirming beyond any shadow of doubt that a subject (individual) and their representation perceived via an unsupervised source (a phone, camera, etc) are currently one and the same.

In a nutshell, 3D face matching is a computer system’s ability to estimate the probability that two 3D FaceMaps were derived from the same human.

FaceTec’s 3D matching algorithms are at least two orders of magnitude more accurate than any 2D matching algorithms, because they operate on 3D Data that is captured from a 2D Camera, using patented technology.

“Apple, Google, and Intel understand this, so their 3D Face Matching systems use 3D infrared cameras, but that, of course, requires each device to include special hardware. In contrast, FaceTec securely performs 3D Matching from virtually any device with a 2D camera,” states FaceTec.

3D FaceMaps are much more accurate replicas of the 3D human users they were collected from than 2D photos or videos are. This increase is in both depth and breadth of the data, and that data enables FaceTec’s AI to recreate any frontal 2D face photo scenario, and match to another 3D FaceMap with astounding accuracy, and without bias.

For the highest levels of biometric security, high confidence face matching is vital for onboarding, legal identity verification, re-verification, and anti-fraud use cases.

FaceTec 3D match levels: How do they work?

FaceTec offers a range of match levels, which will be set by the organisation using the software according to their accuracy needs. For instance, a high-risk industry like banking would opt for 3D-to-3D face matching, with a match level of 15 (1/125 million FAR). A lower security, such as employee entry for example, would require a lower level.

There is currently no other vendor that can attain these match levels:

  1. 3D:3D Face Matching (up to level 15)
  2. 3D:2D Face Portrait Match (up to level 9)
  3. 3D:2D Third-party ID Photo Matching (up to level 7)

The higher the level, the higher the accuracy (FAR), with 3D-to-3D face matching being the highest tier.

True digital customer onboarding: Built to suit your needs

Digital customer onboarding

With an ever-changing compliance landscape, and frequent updates to legislation, digital customer onboarding has become a major focus for financial institutions across South Africa.

The Financial Intelligence Centre (FICA) Amendment Act of 2017 introduced a risk-based approach to compliance elements such as customer due diligence to the regulatory framework. This risk-based approach requires accountable institutions to fully understand their exposure to money laundering and terrorist financing risks, which in turn means they need to adopt a personalised approach to customer due diligence.

And it is this need that forms the basis of pbVerify’s digital customer onboarding systems – custom built to suit institutions’ specific needs.

True intelligence

pbVerify offers organisations a versatile digital adoption platform for onboarding customers, which is fully compliant with the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act, as well as global anti-money laundering (AML) and know your customer (KYC) requirements.

Our onboarding systems inject true intelligence into companies’ web-based application forms, allowing for the transformation of paper-based credit applications into efficient online web-based forms that verify the identity of the applicant in real time, while automatically drawing consumer and commercial verification reports in the back-office system. These include the following

Digital Onboarding graphic
Caption: pbVerify offers intelligent onboarding systems with in-built rules for the accurate, real-time verification of customers.

True digital onboarding eradicates fraudulent applications and enables companies to approve applications that are guaranteed to be of required quality – in just minutes. Can you spoof our facial recognition tech? $100k says you can’t

World renowned 3D liveness and facial recognition company FaceTec is so confident in its software, that it offers a $100 000 reward for any successful spoof of its biometric authentication solution.

When it comes to preventing fraud, only the best technology with the tightest security and highest levels of accuracy is good enough.

That is why, as a service that facilitates fraud prevention for credit providers that require strict risk management protocols, pbVerify uses FaceTec, the global standard for liveness and 3D face matching.

FaceTec’s 3D Liveness Detection technology is so watertight, and the company is so confident in its anti-fraud aptitude, that it offers a $100 000 Spoof Bounty Program that challenges hackers to find a spoof that fools its system.

And, since its introduction in 2019 to date, not a single attempt at fooling FaceTec’s software has succeeded – despite countless digital and physical spoof artifacts (including hi-res photos and videos, life-like masks, and mannequin heads) being used to try do so.

Why a spoof bounty program?

The essence of FaceTec’s spoof bounty program is about much more than just a monetary reward. Its goal is primarily to uncover potentially unknown vulnerabilities in the Liveness AI and security layers, so that any issues can be patched and the anti-spoofing capabilities and overall platform security elevated even further.

Cyber-attack resource website CAPEC defines identity spoofing as “The action of assuming (i.e., taking on) the identity of some other entity (human or non-human) and then using that identity to accomplish a goal.”

Ill-intentioned tech-savvy individuals could, for instance, craft messages that purport to come from a different source, or they may use stolen authentication credentials to get away with very serious and harmful crimes against citizens and companies.

Since being founded in 2013, FaceTec has dug more deeply into anti-spoofing than anyone else. The company has performed tens-of-millions of spoof attempts, with every conceivable type of media, and learned how to stop them.

FaceTec debuts voice guidance, advanced OCR with new updates

The 3D face matching market leader’s latest software updates take 3D liveness, OCR and 3D face authentication to a whole new level.

FaceTec hasn’t become the global standard for liveness and 3D face matching by resting on its laurels, so when we got the news that the software company’s latest SDKs were available, we got excited. And with good reason – here’s what FaceTec v9.1.0 and v9.2.0 bring to the table…

Version 9.1.0 – Good, better…best UX

First of all, v9.1.0 has seriously upped the user experience, to increase first-time user rates even further. In its release notes FaceTec says, “Our team has worked to polish the user interface and provide an even more consistent and intuitive experience across more than a million device, platform, version, and browser combinations.”

In addition, new features courtesy of v9.1.0 include:

  • Dynamic Retry Screen guidance text: As before, the text area below the User Image and Ideal Image on the Retry Screen is customisable, but the behaviour has changed, and there are additional text elements to customise.
  • 3D Face Scan instant quality checks: Users cannot press the ‘I’m Ready’ button until their face is of a reasonably appropriate size in the camera. Once the ‘I’m Ready’ button is pressed, and the user environment and face is sufficient, a quick countdown will be displayed, and the session will proceed.
  • Usage Log changes: There are a few changes in v9.1.0.0 related to Usage Logs, including:
    • Availability of HTTPS Usage Log send.
    • New prescriptive & turnkey Usage Log send solutions for both SFTP and HTTPS modes.
    • Configuration Wizard builds create fully configured Standard and Custom Server packages that instantly use best practices and code written to automatically send Usage Logs via either HTTPS or SFTP.
    • Usage Log Server.
  • Vocal Guidance (audible MP3 user directives): This new feature allows developers to customise instructions that are read out loud to users in order to provide additional assistance.
  • Updated multi-line text customisation: In v9.1.0, each line of text must be customised. Previously, for elements that spanned multiple lines, FaceTec would try to make the text fit flexibly.  In v9.1.0 onwards, you must configure each line individually.  In other words, in v9.1.0, no text will overflow to new lines – you must specify text that is concise enough to fit on the line you are customising.
  • Dynamic device/model-specific font sizing: In v9.1.0, you can still customise any interface element with your chosen font, however the Device SDK will now set the font size based on the device’s properties.

Version 9.2.0 – Optical Character Recognition

The latest version of FaceTec’s SDKs features Photo ID Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Auto-Capture.

Currently in Beta, this awesome new feature is set to become intensely accurate and much faster in the very near future.

Meanwhile, here’s the lowdown:

  1. The FaceTec Server SDK now outputs text OCR’d from a photo ID.
  2. The Photo ID OCR Template Creator allows you to accept any ID type for supported languages. (For a list of the more than 500 languages FaceTec supports, click HERE)
  3. FaceTec customers can create their own OCR templates using the OCR Template Creator.
  4. Photo IDs are auto-captured, instead of the user being required to press the “Take Photo” button. If the user experiences issues with Auto-Capture, a fallback is in place to take photos with a button press.
  5. The ID Scan process now allows the user to confirm the information OCR’d from the ID.
  6. For face scanning (3D Liveness, Enrolment and 3D:3D Matching), FaceTec has kept current code compatible and added new and recommended default calling conventions for handling results in the Device SDK Processors.

With updates like these, the future of 3D facial authentication is looking more and more exciting. Keep an eye on our blog, we’ll keep you posted. Until next time, happy authenticating!

pbVerify Authentication Questions API boosts risk management protocol

Our Authentication Questions API enables businesses to verify individuals are who they claim to be, using knowledge-based questions.

Authenticating parties involved in high-risk transactions efficiently, and with a high level of confidence, is critical to the ongoing security and efficacy of any institution that deals with customers and credit.

pbVerify’s Authentication Questions API is a fraud prevention tool that can be used by the likes of banks, telcos, insurance agencies, etc, to help confirm an individual is who they say they are, using knowledge-based questions (KBA).

There to protect the interest of the business, the agent and the consumer, this authentication tool provides clients with the ability to verify a consumer via a set of random questions that are obtained from their unique consumer profile held at the Bureau.

How it works

  • Our Authentication Questions API starts by extracting the consumer’s data from their credit bureau profile and inserting the available data into a set of question templates. These question templates consist of 186 different questions that could be populated.
  • Once the question templates have been formulated, the API references the subsequent data, and generates other possible answers to the questions.
  • The API then sends the entire question set to a randomiser, where questions are split into a positive and negative context of themselves.
  • In the next stage of the randomisation process, the API creates an algorithm sequence variation of each question, where each individual question could populate in 4 000 different ways.
  • Thereafter, five questions are selected and sent through to the client for answering.
  • The question and answer sheet will then display in a mixture of yes/no or multiple choice questions.

Referred to as “failover”, this API acts as an additional tier of security in instances in which an institution needs to verify a customer is who they say they are, when there is for example no photograph registered with Home Affairs, or in a call centre environment where there is no physical element.

And, because every business need is unique, our Authentication Questions API was built with flexible configuration, allowing you to set the number of questions the individual in question needs to answer, as well as what percentage they need to get right in order to proceed and how many attempts they will have before they need to be physically present to complete the process.

FaceTec Age Check bolsters verification

Years of investigation into anti-spoofing agents, such as age estimation, has resulted in watertight facial recognition software.

Years of delving into one of the fastest-growing ID authentication biometric technologies since fingerprint scanning – facial recognition technology – has resulted in a liveness detection service with so many facets, that it is now spoof-resistant.

One of the more recent developments honed by liveness and 3D face matching leader, FaceTec, is Age Check (Age Estimation). Without the need for an ID photo, FaceTec Age Check estimates the age of an individual using 3D face mapping.

Age Estimation is performed with every liveness check, enrolment, authentication, and photo ID match, and – together with other data verification points proven by FaceTec’s technology – yields the most accurate and trusted results in the market today.

In addition, because the 3D FaceMap is all that is needed for Age Check, the process can be completely anonymous. Age Check can also be used to corroborate the date of birth shown on a photo ID.

FaceTec, which owns the only 3D face authentication software in the world that is iBeta Level 1 and Level 2 certified, and that is backed by a $100 000 Spoof Bounty Programme, says it is committed to continuous improvement to age checking practices. “Our algorithms will continue to improve over time.”

Facial recognition growth

The use of age estimation in facial biometrics has gained popularity among government agencies and corporates alike over the past few years, with new use cases being discovered on a regular basis.

It is estimated that 2021 will see facial recognition, which includes age estimation data, in use at the top 20 US airports for 100% of international passengers, including American citizens.

Locally, emerging biometric technologies have become ubiquitous across many parts of Africa, with facial recognition meaningfully deployed in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Uganda. At the moment, the technology is used primarily to help combat identity theft, fraud and terrorism threats.

Commercially, banks have proven to be early adopters with the implementation of eKYC solutions for onboarding processes, and more and more manufacturers are including face recognition in their products, such as Apple with its Face ID technology.

Age estimation services, specifically, are becoming more common due to their ability to strengthen authentication and system security to prevent impersonation attacks. Facial security checks are able to prevent bank card cloning, fraudulent exam takers, and identity theft. Age estimation can also be used for adult entertainment venue access, and purchase of age-restricted goods.

pbVerify bolsters product stack with PhoneID & Score

Our new mobile phone-based API allows businesses to effectively evaluate their fraud risks and enhance the user experience.

pbVerify has added to its risk management suite of API products, giving businesses even more shield against fraud, and the reputational and revenue blow it causes – this time via mobile phone identification and score.

The pbVerify PhoneID & Score API gives businesses detailed and actionable global phone number and subscriber data intelligence, to the end of reinforcing authentications, evaluating fraud risks, and enhancing overall user experience.

This powerful API consists of two parts:

  • Phone number identification (PhoneID): Businesses submit a mobile phone number and get data back that helps them answer critical questions about consumers. The API offers data intelligence about a consumer’s device, contact information, and more. Phone number data intelligence can help strengthen the user verification process, reduce fake accounts, inform risk models, improve conversions, and even determine the optimal channel for message delivery.

Additionally, PhoneID’s SIM Swap feature allows businesses to find out whether a phone number’s SIM has been swapped and if so, at what point. The API then evaluates the likelihood of the SIM swap having been to commit fraud, using a scale from 1 to 4.

The table below indicates an example of the report information with the different SIM swap risk bands:

Mobile phone number/ID score (Score): By registering fake accounts, criminals can attack legitimate users, thereby damaging your brand’s reputation and revenue. By identifying and blocking fraudsters at account registration, businesses effectively streamline the process for genuine users. The “Score” part of pbVerify’s PhoneID & Score API allows businesses to carry out reputation-based scoring on a consumer’s mobile phone number, helping them to identify bad actors out to use their account for phishing attacks, promo abuse, and other fraud.

PhoneID & Score benefits

  1. Global data coverage: PhoneID will answer critical questions about users with data available in over 230 countries and territories.
  2. Stronger authentication & reduction of fraud: PhoneID gives instant API access to ongoing and accurate key phone number and user identity data attributes, allowing businesses to make better decisions about new registrations, user activity and fraud risks.
  3. Easy integration: PhoneID enables business to be done with absolute confidence. Real-time data on phone numbers and users enables improved conversions, as well as heightened compliance.
  4. Grow user base responsibly: Phone Score allows businesses to streamline the account registration process and grow their userbase of verified and valuable users securely.
  5. Identify fake & suspicious users: Phone Score allows businesses to reduce fraudulent activity and validate that end-users are who they say they are.
  6. Protect brand reputation & value: Phone Score allows businesses to reduce the negative impacts of fraud while creating a more authentic and valuable user base.

For a business, falling victim to fraud is potentially ruinous. pbVerify’s suite of products help businesses stop fraud in its tracks. Forewarned is forearmed.
